Schools Taking Steps to Reduce Homework by jacklyn

http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/news/2012/09/schools-taking-steps-to-reduce.php the link to the news.
Summary: Students now have homework-free day each week in Anglo-Chinese School(Junior). This activity is to ensure that students have enough rest. In Mondays and Thursdays, students will not have homework for that day. And for other days, there is a homework limit as not more than two hours to complete it. To let student have more rest, eights schools have contacted The Straits Times and told them they have been managed the amount of homework for students to let them have enough rest.
Opinion: In my opinion, I don't think that limiting homework for students is a good idea on helping them have enough time to rest. How do the teacher know whether how long will it take for a student to finish their homework? I think it depends on how well do the students understand in class or how hard is the homework is. In a class there could be students who have good understandings and also students who don't really get what teacher teach in class. For that kind of students, i don't think limit the amount of homework did help them, because as they don't understand what teacher teach in lesson, they will need more time on homework and it will increase the stress of the student.

Proposing ' sociology of sanitation' as a subject in India by Damien Hew

DAMIEN: PLS IN FUTURE PLS GO TO NEWS SITES LISTED ON THE RIGHT OF THIS BLOG & ARTICLE LENGTH 600 W
A group of academics in New Delhi is proposing to make 'sociology of sanitation' a sub-discipline subject for undergraduates and post graduates so as to better understand the conflict and contrast among social groups in India. They are recommending this due to the fact that existing disciplines of sociology is not competent enough to help in solving the problems of society not only in gender equality but also poverty, hygiene ( they want to achieve total elimination of open defecation in public ) and chidren's welfare. Link to article
I feel that this proposal should be accepted by the Indian government and make it mandatory for all students to take it as a subject. In light of the recent New Delhi gang rape, i feel it is wise to put this plan into action to teach people the proper moral values and respect to the opposite gender. Besides showing gender equality, it could also enlighten them of the wrongdoings of defecating on open public in which it is a common sight  across India. Furthermore, by teaching them about poverty, they will learn to be more sympathetic and benevolent to the poor and in turn makes the society to be a much more gracious and considerate one.

EXAMPLE BY MRS TEOH: DESIGNER BABIES

SUMMARY : In the UK, a family who had seen generations of their women die of breast cancer was given the chance to change all that with a scientific process called PGD. Normally women who have this cancer gene undergo a double mastectomy. However the revolutionary PGD process allows for screening and removal of the defective gene. Several embryos from the couple were genetically tested and the ones without the breast cancer gene were kept refrigerated for incubation whenever a new family member was desired. Doctors explain it is not a cancer cure and does not suit every couple.

OPINION: In my opinion science has advanced so much that we are now able to determine the future of our children to give them a brighter future. Without the once inheritable diseases like Muscular Dystrophy – which Stephen Hawking suffered from - mankind can then live in an age of better health. This benefit will reduce tremendous health costs and allow the money saved to be channelled to other needs. Without debilitating diseases, there will be less suffering within families. Children who have been set free from the legacy of a fatal illness will be able to live a full life and contribute significantly to society. All in all, society benefits from such an advancement.

AMBIKA THIS IS NOT HOW I TAUGHT YOU TO BLOG - YOU NEED TO REDO A SUMMARY OF 80 WORDS & 1 EXPOSITORY PARA OF 80 WORDS - THE TOPIC IS EDUCATION. PLS REFER TO MY SAMPLE BLOG "DESIGNER BABIES"
Everyone in Singapore had heard about the accident of the two brothers. It had shocked everyone. Its not the first time where an accident had happened in Singapore. Its so unbearable. Especially when we put our ourself in the mother shoes its going to hurt all of us very badly. Its not one son who died but its her two only children who had died in the accident. i feel that accidents happening in Singapore are becoming too common. I have also come across such accidents in my own family. but luckily they survived with just minor injuries. Singapore has to do something to theses careless drivers who cause a life a death.

S’pore Pupils Top Tests, Score Higher In Reasoning. By: Soon Qi Wei

Singapore’s primary and secondary school students remain world beaters in mathematics, science and reading. The test scores showed that not only did Singapore increase its share of top performers, but the weaker students also moved up, improving their scores. The results validate the approach adopted by the Ministry of Education to allow more time for teachers to develop critical thinking skills in their students. A total of 12,500 Singapore students sat the tests held last year, and across the academic streams they achieved higher scores than those who took the tests in 2006 and 2007.
I feel that this is a very great achievement for our nation as this proves that even if we are a small country, our intellectual ability far surpasses other countries. I believe that this is very important as it is also for our economic survival. In order to maintain a strong economy, bright and brilliant minds are required, this shows that we do not need the help of the usual foreign talents and instead we are able to survive on our own. The world's budget English teacher. By Lim Kay Kiat

Philippines is quickly becoming one of world's cheapest places to learn English. In fact, Philippine has seen a huge increase in the number of people who enroll in their universities as Philippines' universities has one of the cheapest school fees in the world. De La Salle, an English teacher, has also claimed she has seen an increase in the number of European students who enroll in her school. Universities in Philippine generally teach American English and most of the teachers there have an American accent even though they are locals. This is because Philippine was an American colony for more than 5 years, and many locals were employed in industries which served the Americans; thus they had to pick up the American accent.

In my opinion, I feel that although Philippine might offer cheap and good English teachers, however many locals there do not speak the perfect American English, but instead their native language, Bahasa Indonesia. Thus students who seek to further their English studies in Indonesia might face difficulties in Indonesia when it comes to communication. Furthermore, the most crucial thing when it comes to learning a language is to read, write and speak it more often so that you can constantly practice and thus improve in that language; however this would not be possible in Indonesia.

Hostage siege at Algeria gas plant not over! By Lim Kay Kiat

A recent terrorist kidnap at the Amenas gas field cost the lives of 4 hostages and casualty figures are said to rise. Authorities claimed that the hostages where released and the kidnap had ended on Thursday, however this is not true as special forces are still surrounding the perimeter of the plant. Many governments still report their citizens missing. A hostage who has just been rescued claims to have been hiding under his bed for more than 40 hours before he was rescued. An unknown source claims that the raid was carried out in retaliation for the French intervention against Islamist groups.

In my opinion, terrorists now a days are getting bolder and better. This matter needs to be properly handled so that we can reduce the number of casualties and deaths to it minimum. Furthermore, I think the Algeria government should not hesitate to seek help from the United Nations or its neighboring countries if they require assistance, as now lives are at stake and they should not just care about the sovereignty of their country but instead the safety of the hostages. Lastly, i believe that if this crisis is not handled properly, the terrorist will be more ambitious and bolder as they will see the Algeria government as weak and incapable of dealing with them.

MRT lines BY BRANDON

Singapore will have two new MRT lines, while three existing lines will be extended. These will double the rail network stretch to 360 kilometres, compared with the current 178 kilometres. The new lines are the Cross Island Line (CRL) and Jurong Region Line (JRL). The Circle Line (CCL), Downtown Line (DTL) and North-East Line (NEL) -- will be extended. The CRL will run from Jurong Industrial Estate and pass through areas such as West Coast, Bukit Timah, Ang Mo Kio, Punggol and Pasir Ris before ending in Changi. The 50-kilometre line, which is expected to be completed by 2030, will be connected to all existing lines. The other new line -- Jurong Region Line -- will be completed in 2025. The 20-kilometre line will pass through areas such as Jurong West, Jurong Industrial District, West Coast, Choa Chu Kang and potential new developments in Tengah.
In my opinion, as Singapore's population continues to increase, it is essential for more mrt stations to be built to facilitate movement of people traveling to various destinations. Thus by opening two more extra lines, traveling from place to place would be much easier, faster and more efficient as you would have a specific and known destination to travel to without difficulties. This also helps to reduce the number of people per train and number of people in per station as both trains and stations increase. With that , problems like overcrowding would be solved.

Early HIV drugs are able to slow down virus? By: Soon Qi Wei

As of now, HIV treatment is only given to people with severe cases of HIV. However, due to research, scientist and doctors have found out that giving a patient HIV drugs as soon as they are diagnosed could be the future of treatment. This helps to lower the chances of HIV being transmitted sexually and it also helps to prolong the victim’s lifespan by a few years. This study would just might be the next lead to curing HIV completely.
In my opinion, this is a huge medical breakthrough as it might help to allow people to live much longer after getting HIV. Slowing down the spread of HIV also adds an extra precaution for infected individuals. However, if HIV is cured in the near future, people, usually afraid of HIV, might just disregard HIV and just act carelessly as HIV is not to be feared anymore. Thus, if HIV gets a cure, it might not necessarily be a very good thing.
